  • The Ultimate Closet Cleanout & Organization Guide

Let’s be honest – your closet is a battlefield. Somewhere between last season’s trends, that dress you swear you’ll fit into again, and an unreasonable number of worn-out clothes, there’s a whole mess waiting to be tamed. But fear not! I’m here to help you reclaim your closet, one hanger at a time.

    Step 1: The Brutal Purge

Before we can get to the fun part (hello, color-coordinated heaven!), we have to face the hard truth: you’re hoarding clothes like a squirrel preparing for winter – and it’s almost SUMMER! So, here’s your tough-love checklist for what must go:

    • Anything with stains you’ve been “meaning” to treat for a year.
    • The jeans from three sizes ago (keep the hope, ditch the clutter!).
    • Shoes that are more painful than your last breakup – or stepping on a Lego in the dark.
    • That concert tee from 2007 – RIP, but it’s time to move on.
    • Anything you forgot you owned (if you haven’t missed it, you don’t need it!).

The 4-Season Rule: If you haven’t worn something in four full seasons (a whole year), it’s time to donate it. If it’s been that long, chances are you won’t be reaching for it again! Note: the exception to this rule is formal wear, which is only worn occasionally.

Pro Tip: If you’re on the fence about an item, put it in a bin and revisit in a month. If you don’t think about it or reach for it in that month, it’s time to say goodbye.

    Step 2: Organization Overhaul

Now that you’ve successfully decluttered (and maybe shed a tear over that high school hoodie), it’s time to put everything back the right way – because your clothes deserve better than being shoved into a corner.

    Must-Have Closet Organizers:

    1. Slim Velvet Hangers – Bulky plastic hangers? We don’t know her. These sleek hangers save space and keep your clothes from slipping to the floor in protest. They also come in lots of fun colors, in case you’re like me (OCD neat freak) and you enjoy color-coding your hangers by clothing category or season.
    2. Clear Acrylic Shelf Dividers – Because sweater avalanches are a real danger. These help keep your stacks neat and not collapsing at the first sign of movement.
    3. Hanging Shoe Organizer – Let’s get those shoes off the floor, shall we? This genius organizer keeps your kicks visible and within reach, instead of being buried in the chaos down below.
    4. Storage Bins with Labels – Perfect for seasonal items, accessories, or anything you don’t need daily but still want to access without a full excavation.
    5. Rotating Scarf & Belt Hanger – No more tangled messes! A simple hanger with hooks keeps scarves, belts, and ties in check.
    6. Hanging Closet Shelves – These fabric organizers are a lifesaver for folded items like sweaters, jeans, or even handbags. They maximize vertical space and keep things tidy. I love the pockets on the side too – I use them to set aside mismatched socks until a mate is found – or until the divorce is final and a lonely sock gets discarded (RIP).
    7. Over-the-Door Organizer – If you’re short on closet space, don’t forget about the back of the door! These organizers can store slippers, socks, accessories, or even extra beauty products.

    Step 3: The Finishing Touches

Now that your closet is looking Pinterest-worthy, let’s add those final touches:

    • Color-code your clothes – Not only does it look aesthetically pleasing, but it also makes getting dressed so much easier.  I also organize by style: blouses, camisoles, t-shirts, dresses, dress pants, etc. all belong with their respective styles.
    • Use matching hangers – Instant upgrade! (See the Slim Velvet Hangers linked above)
    • Add a fresh scent – A little lavender sachet or essential oil puffs to keep your closet smelling divine.  These Closet Air Freshener Sachets are my favorite and they come in several scents.
    • Implement the “One In, One Out” Rule – Every time you buy something new, remove something old. Trust me, your future self will thank you.

    The Final Pep Talk

Look at you, conquering the chaos and emerging victorious! Your closet is now a serene, organized paradise, free from the tyranny of clutter. Now, let’s just try to keep it this way… at least until the next shopping spree.

    Happy organizing!
